Owen Clary and Pedro Guimarães put together strong matches to earn their way to the District Tournament next Friday and Saturday at Troy high school.
Clary repeated an early season victory over Pace of North College Hill. Then wrestled through a tight, action-packed match with Kidd of Blanchester before finally wearing his opponent down and earning the Fall in the last 30 seconds.
In the 1st place match, Cody Gunn was too much for Clary, adding team points to Waynesville's impressive team win on the day.
Guimarães roared out of the gate, securing a quick fall over his opponent from Blanchester with a judo style headlock with leg lift. He then threw his second round opponent to his back right off the whistle again before ultimately falling to Liming from Greeneview.
Guimarães got right back into the mix in the consolation rounds, getting another quick Fall over Potter of Norwood in 49 seconds to earn a guanteeed spot at Districts.
Adding in the next two matches, he had shortcut the usually long road through the wrestle-backs by earning 3 pins in under 2 minutes total to earn a solid 3rd place finish in a talented 190 lb weight class.
Abe Sanders continued his rapid growth as a wrestler, attacking with more confidence and quicker transitions between the skills he's learning for the first time this season.
After a first round loss to the #1 seed, Abe rebounded quickly, and controlled the second match, earning the fall in the first period over his opponent from Bishop Fenwick, ultimately earning 6th in the consolation rounds.
After finishing 13 out of a field of over 21 teams, the Eagles look forward to another strong week of practice to continue their growth trajectory, flying into Districts at Troy high school next Friday afternoon.
