OHSAA Wrestling Districts Recap

| By:
While falling one match short of sending Owen Clary to the State Tournament, there was much to celebrate for CHCA Eagle Wrestling this season!

No one was sure how the first CHCA Wrestling season in years would turn out, but many wins and pins into the season, Owen Clary and Pedro Guimaraes survived the Sectional Tournament to represent Eagle Wrestling at the District Tournament at the Hobart Arena in Troy, OH.

The 2-day tournament started Friday with the 16 best wrestlers at each weight class from 4 different Sectional tournaments, and continued through Saturday afternoon to find the top 4 at each weight to send to the State Tournament hosted by The Ohio State University.

Guimaraes started strong against his opponent from West Jefferson, gaining an early lead before getting caught and pinned later in the match. The second match saw more scrambles, but ultimately the wrestler from Dixie earned the fall to knock Guimaraes out of contention.

Clary started Friday with a tough loss to Springfield Catholic Central's Brody Adams before putting together a strong win over Li from Columbus Academy to earn his way into Saturday's wrestling. His road continued with an injury forfeit from the opponent from Coldwater who had been injured Friday night.

Next up was a familiar opponent. Clary and Blanchester's Kidd had wrestled a tight back-and-forth match at Sectionals before Clary was able to earn the fall in 5:35.
This time, Clary took control early, showing much skill and strategy improvement and earning the Fall in 1:14.

Next up, another familiar opponent in Cody Gunn from Waynesville, who had defeated Clary quickly in the 1st place match at Sectionals. Gunn would again earn the fall, although Clary wrestled much more competitively, displaying evidence of the work put into the last few practices of the season.

Throughout the tournament, the Eagles learned from watching top-ranked wrestlers in the state from multiple weight classes, including those from #1 ranked Graham, and top 15 teams like Lima Central Catholic, Miami East, and Versailles.

In all, it was a fitting end to a pioneering season as the Eagles learned the basics, enjoyed pushing themselves past their previous limits, and made new friends along the way.

The next Eagle Wrestling event will be May 23.

Keep your eye out for more information on the all-day event where all ages will celebrate the past and recent history of CHCA Wrestling, enjoy time for getting on the mat to learn, and look forward to the Future of CHCA Eagle Wrestling at multiple age levels!
